Osteo for …
Men
Did you know that tight muscles are weaker?
Having greater muscle mass is fantastic for strength but it can often contribute to stiffness and weakness if the muscles are too tight. Our muscles need to have just the right tone to create power and strength.
Muscle imbalances (where some muscles are strong and others weak) can lead to problems in posture and predispose you to injury. This can happen all over your body but a good example is in your shoulders (rotator cuff injuries). Strong pec or chest muscles combined with a lack of flexibility at the front of the body and weakness behind the shoulder blades can lead to the shoulder joint sitting off centre and leading to strain when loading. To keep men’s bodies injury free we look towards finding a good balance between the two by using muscle and joint release techniques, advising on correct form while building strength and specific stretches to improve flexibility in the right places!
Men have pelvic floors too!
Pelvic floors can be strained with excessive lifting, coughing or sneezing and bowel issues such as constipation. Osteopaths use non-invasive techniques to balance the pelvis and release the pelvic floor so it can function properly avoiding accidents for the bladder and bowel.
Osteoporosis and falls prevention in men
Almost 25% of people with osteoporosis are men and as we get older men are also at risk of falls too! When joints are stiff and lose their mobility, the risk of falls can increase. Your osteopath will make sure your spine and extremities are free (right down to your ankles and toes)so that you are more agile and responsive to the most uneven surface or unpredictable circumstance. We can also provide a tailored balance, mobility and strength program for you.
Labour related injuries
Working in trades or manual handling jobs can create increased loading on thes spine and weight bearing joints. This can result in back pain, disc injuries and wear and tear. Our osteopaths can diagnose and treat these injuries with hands of treatment such as massage, joint mobilisation and manipulation, cupping or dry needling. Taping and bracing may be utilised to help speedup recovery from an injury and our Bauerfeind braces worn whilst lifting or during repetitive tasks such as shoveling can also help avoid further injury or reinjury.
